Why do straight women like to write about men banging? This is the foundational question of the academic field of fan studies. Early scholars in the field thought that the answer might be that in the absence of gender inequality, fanfiction readers and writers could explore what truly equal, consensual relationships might look like. These days, we know it's more complicated than that: fans are much queerer than scholars originally assumed, and they do much more interesting, nuanced, and subtle things when it comes to consent in their porn. In this panel, elmyra will explore how popular slash and BL tropes allow fanfic readers and writers to play around with ideas of consent and apply them beyond fiction to their own lives and the real world more generally.
