In this panel, Dr. Thomas Baudinette introduces you to the exciting new world of Thai Boys’ Love dramas and their related media. As a scholar of Asian queer popular culture, Dr. Baudinette explains the history of this new form of media, including its links to Japanese manga and Korean idol music, and introduces you to some of the most popular shows to come out of Thailand. Dr Baudinette then explores the world of khu jin, imaginary Thai BL "ships" between celebrity couples that have revitalised Thailand's pop culture landscape and placed Thailand on the map as a new global pop culture producer. Throughout the talk, Dr. Baudinette also reflects on some of the issues central to the academic study of Asian queer media, including how Asian queer media functions according to cultural logics that differ greatly to the queer media of North America and Europe.

In this presentation, James Welker will trace the history of the BL genre in Japan with an emphasis on manga. His primary focus will be on the emergence of the genre in the 1970s and major events in its development over the next several decades. He will cover the major terminology, shōnen'ai, yaoi, and boys’ love (bōizu rabu)/BL explaining why their meanings in Japanese differ from their use by many of their fans outside Japan.

Thai BL Watch Party: Why R U?

A 2020 Thai BL drama about two couples that overcome a rocky start and come together despite being opposites. The story starts off with Zon, a shy yet stubborn sci-fi writer, who starts to think that he’s fallen into a BL novel written by his sister Zol. She paired him off with Saifah, a popular musician and a sophomore that Zon had some issues with in the past. Zol also writes about Zon’s friend Tutor, who is said to be “wise beyond his age” and acts rationally, while his counterpart Fighter is the silent but emotional kind. Stream: 1-2 episodes.

A 2020 Thai BL drama focused on university student Tine who has a gay admirer, Green. After his first attempt fails, Tine joins the music club, where Sarawat is a member. Eventually, Sarawat agrees to Tine’s offer, but will their fake relationship become real?
